Godoy becomes Panama all-time appearance leader in win over Guatemala

AUSTIN, Texas – The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup continued with Panama earning a 1-nil win against Guatemala in Group C on Friday at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Tomás Rodríguez opened the scoring in the 19' to give Panama the lead, striking from close range to capitalize on an assist from Amir Murillo. The goal was the second for Rodríguez in the 2025 Group Stage.

Óscar Santis replied in search of the equalizer with a dangerous left-footed attempt from the centre of the box in the 28', which was saved by Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera.

Los Canaleros created danger in the following minutes, with a shot from Carlos Martínez from the right side of the box in the 33' and a header from Murillo in the 37', both met by saves from Guatemala’s Nicholas Hagen.

Panama pushed to extend its lead with two late scoring opportunities, first in the 84' with a shot from a difficult angle by Murillo on the right end of the box, followed by a powerful left drive from Jorge Gutiérrez in the 89', but both attempts were stifled by Hagen.

Mosquera recorded one save en route to his first clean sheet of the campaign. Hagen tallied seven saves in the match.

Panama captain Aníbal Godoy reached 148 matches to become the all-time leader in appearances for Panama, surpassing Gabriel Gómez for the most matches played in the senior national team.

Panama will remain in Austin, Texas, to take on Jamaica in a battle for first place in Group C on Tuesday. Simultaneously, Guatemala will clash with Guadeloupe in Houston, Texas.
